[The video feed clicks on, and Don looks thoughtfully at the camera for a moment before speaking.]

Another Christmas in Luceti.

[His tone is direct, just stating a fact, but somewhere behind it is a note of melancholy.]

This is my third. All of them have been in this house. All of them have been with different people.

[He slides back from the journal, revealing a corner of his winter room. He's been gradually moving into it over the past week, and has more or less taken up residence now.]

I've seen a lot of people come and go. There probably aren't many left who remember when Luceti didn't have electricity.

[He picks up some small bit of tech and squints at it.]

When I arrived here, the drafts were just starting. There were no missions. The Battle Dome didn't exist. We didn't have a farm and there was a desert where the ocean is now.

[He carefully threads a length of wire through a hole in the tech part.]

The buildings were shorter. Some of the stores and restaurants weren't open. [A pause.] I think I'm forgetting things...

[The wire slides through, and he knots the loose ends to form a loop.]

Does anyone remember other things that have changed? Or, does anyone want a history lesson? I'll be here all day.

Your third, is it? What a coincidence-- it's my third Christmas here as well.

[There's a slight melancholic tone in his voice too, though there's also a hint of nostalgia with it.]

[He knows the feeling exactly.]

Are you doing anything special?

Not that I know of yet. We'll probably just spend the day at home and hope Pascal doesn't give anyone one of her inventions as a gift.

[Surprised by this.] I like Pascal's inventions.

How many of them have you seen?

I saw her ice cube game and the bo staff guns.

You mean shotcube? Ah yes, I've heard a great deal about that game from her, though I have yet to try it for myself.

Is that what it's called? You really should try it; it's a lot of fun.

I didn't realize she'd set up a version of it here. Where has she been hiding it? I would think it would be difficult finding a space large enough for a game like that.

She coded it in the Battle Dome. It was very well done.

Now that you mention it, I remember Pao-Lin mentioning that you could code things besides battle simulations in the Battle Dome...

You can now. I have a Manhattan and a random-generation garage.

Manhattan... that's a city from Earth, isn't it? In... New York?

[At least, he thinks that's what he remembers.]

New York City, yes. It's where I'm from.

I thought I remembered reading about it in a book. It really is amazing what you can find in the library here. I had no idea there were worlds like some of the ones I've read about.

Such as?

Such as your world, actually. Where I come from, the idea of vehicles powered by a motor is still something that doesn't exist outside of a few rare examples.

[Sincerely:] I miss vehicles powered by a motor.

I'd like to be able to ride in something other than the shuttle for myself.

... The shuttle?

Yes, it's a ship that's capable of flying from my world to Fodra. It can also fly in the sky in my world as well.

Does your world not have things like that?

We have space shuttles, but they're only used by specially-trained people called astronauts. Conventional science in my world doesn't know of any other planets where humans can survive unaided.

We didn't know of Fodra either until several months ago. It's something of a long story, but you could say it was sort of an unexpected discovery.

[Okay, don't mind Richard putting up a filter, then, because this still isn't a story he likes to make completely public just yet.]
