Sixty-Fifth Theory [Video]

[The video feed clicks on, and Don looks thoughtfully at the camera for a moment before speaking.]

Another Christmas in Luceti.

[His tone is direct, just stating a fact, but somewhere behind it is a note of melancholy.]

This is my third. All of them have been in this house. All of them have been with different people.

[He slides back from the journal, revealing a corner of his winter room. He's been gradually moving into it over the past week, and has more or less taken up residence now.]

I've seen a lot of people come and go. There probably aren't many left who remember when Luceti didn't have electricity.

[He picks up some small bit of tech and squints at it.]

When I arrived here, the drafts were just starting. There were no missions. The Battle Dome didn't exist. We didn't have a farm and there was a desert where the ocean is now.

[He carefully threads a length of wire through a hole in the tech part.]

The buildings were shorter. Some of the stores and restaurants weren't open. [A pause.] I think I'm forgetting things...

[The wire slides through, and he knots the loose ends to form a loop.]

Does anyone remember other things that have changed? Or, does anyone want a history lesson? I'll be here all day.

I'll take you up on that history lesson. It sounds like it's a bit more interesting than I thought.

Any particular area? I'm not really sure where to start...

Well, considering I only arrived about a month ago... anything would be worth at least hearing.

Are you familiar with the Welcome Centers? They have programs now that they didn't when I arrived.

I'm more interested in learning something I can use than regurgitating whatever story these Malnosso decided to put around.

The Welcome Centers are entirely run by villagers. You can get accurate information there.

As for things you can use, I recommend the Filial spirits.

I'm still not sure what I think about this whole magic-and-spirits thing. [This is, at least, progress from absolutely flatly denying it could be remotely possible and insisting this was all illusion/trickery/hallucination.]

I wasn't interested either, for a long time. But now I have contact with four of the spirits, and it's definitely been useful.

[No pressure or anything. Just telling you his experience.]

That sort of thing just doesn't happen where I'm from. It doesn't exist. And I'm pretty sure if it did, Lawndale is the last place it would ever show up.

My partner's world is like that. He doesn't have a soul, technically. But he was able to contact one of the spirits. They're very equal-opportunity that way.

[Yes, but on the chance she's right and this is all a grand delusion (not entirely unthinkable), does she want to invite it in by seeking out more?]

For now, I think I'll pass.

If it's rational explanations you're interested in, I have a sort of science club you're welcome to join.

[She'd deny this thought ever crossing her mind, but maybe Quinn was right. Maybe she needed to reach out just a bit more.]

A science club sounds a bit more like my thing. What do you guys do?

Honestly, not much. The general idea is that we meet once in a while to share what we've learned about this place, but I'm not very good at organizing it.

Count me in for next time, I guess. [This is not quite a put-upon tone, but she doesn't seem to muster much enthusiasm, either. Then again, she never really does.]

[He had noticed.]

[She really, really, hopes it's not going to be some stereotypical name for a pet turtle.]

Your parents were art-lovers, huh? That's pretty cool.

My father was, yes.

[He's impressed you recognize the name.]

[She reads. Prefers books to people, really. And her ~~only~~ best friend paints.]

Does that mean you have a budding career as a starving artist?

I'm good at starving and bad at art, so I would say yes.

[They said food was pretty plentiful here, so he must mean back at his home.]

My last foray into artistic expression didn't go so well either.

[Whether she means the poster with Jane that the school guidance counselor and principal deliberately altered without their permission, or the very failed attempt at helping Jane with hair dye.]

I sort of messed it up. And it was my best friend's hair. I'm pretty sure that's against any girl friendship code. [Except it hadn't been intentional. And of course they'd eventually talked through what was really bothering both of them at the time of the argument.]
