Sixty-Fifth Theory [Video]

[The video feed clicks on, and Don looks thoughtfully at the camera for a moment before speaking.]

Another Christmas in Luceti.

[His tone is direct, just stating a fact, but somewhere behind it is a note of melancholy.]

This is my third. All of them have been in this house. All of them have been with different people.

[He slides back from the journal, revealing a corner of his winter room. He's been gradually moving into it over the past week, and has more or less taken up residence now.]

I've seen a lot of people come and go. There probably aren't many left who remember when Luceti didn't have electricity.

[He picks up some small bit of tech and squints at it.]

When I arrived here, the drafts were just starting. There were no missions. The Battle Dome didn't exist. We didn't have a farm and there was a desert where the ocean is now.

[He carefully threads a length of wire through a hole in the tech part.]

The buildings were shorter. Some of the stores and restaurants weren't open. [A pause.] I think I'm forgetting things...

[The wire slides through, and he knots the loose ends to form a loop.]

Does anyone remember other things that have changed? Or, does anyone want a history lesson? I'll be here all day.

I sort of messed it up. And it was my best friend's hair. I'm pretty sure that's against any girl friendship code. [Except it hadn't been intentional. And of course they'd eventually talked through what was really bothering both of them at the time of the argument.]

Did it - get better? [He's not entirely sure what words to use for this.]

Yeah. She just dyed it back to black again.

... Herself. [She'd told Jane she wasn't the right person to ask for that sort of help. Anything she can do? Sure. But fashion and hair are more her sister's sphere.]

[Oh. That doesn't sound so bad.]

Is that really the kind of thing girls do together?

Apparently so. It was a first for me. And it was her idea.

[Ah. He gets it.]

What do you usually do with your friends? If you don't mind me asking?

Usually just watch TV or something. Or go for pizza.

Really? That's it? [ - ] I mean -- it sounds so normal.

I guess it is normal. [And with something that simple, she says a bit more than she probably would have at another time.] I guess that's why I'm having trouble with all the things going on here. [Not least of which are talking turtles.]

It seems to me you're doing better than most people. [Case in point, talking turtles.]

Well... Talking to fairies and elves and wizards might still be healthier than talking to myself, at least. [She's been known to do that once or twice under stress.]

What's wrong with talking to yourself?

Nothing, if you want people to think you're a crazy old lady already when you're barely finishing high school.

Do people think that? I've been called many things, but a crazy old lady is not one of them.

I'm no biology expert, but I'm pretty sure you're not a lady. [It's the voice, really. A guy's voice. A turtle that has a guy's voice.]

[He's not, thanks for noticing.]

Crazy old anything, then. I get "space case" or "egghead" or "Nerdle the Turtle".

[He can't believe he's admitting to that, but he kind of likes you.]

Those are new ones on me. I usually just hear 'brain'. When they get creative, it's 'geek'.

My brothers always had too much time on their hands. I'm glad yours had better ways of occupying themselves.

They weren't exactly brothers, just the kids back in high school. [She was juuust finally graduating before Luceti threw a wrench in the works of her plans to escape via college.]

Oh. High school.

[Well, this is awkward. Him not having gone to a real school (outside of Luceti) and all.]

[For all Daria knows, he goes to school with bunches of other talking animals. And Mother Goose as a teacher. Why not.]

You sound about as excited by it as I was.

[You can go on assuming something like that.]

Was yours that bad?

It was a high school. By definition, that's bad. I'm hoping they're right when they say college gets better. [She was supposed to find out for herself before Luceti happened.]

Mm.

[It's a worldly "mm", possibly implying that of course he is familiar with high schools, but hadn't really noticed that his own was perhaps a bit more tolerable than average.]

What are you planning to study?

I guess that depends on where I'm accepted. I'd like to study writing. [But she doesn't have anywhere near the confidence to put herself out there to try that.]
