Fifty-Fifth Theory [Voice/Action]

[Don has been returned from his mission with the Malnosso. In this case, that means that his guide-droid politely but firmly made it clear to him that sorry, but he had to leave.]

[His journal is returned to him, he's shown to a teleporter, and a moment later he's standing in the village's coffee shop. After getting something - well, a number of somethings - to eat, he settles into a booth and opens said journal.]

Guys, I'm back. I'm at the coffee shop. [Almost as an afterthought:] I'm okay. Robert, can you bring my snowsuit?

[Some time later, he adds:] Has anyone heard of a Deadly Nadder? Or a Gronckle?

[Don taps his journal, and nudges a blueberry muffin towards Robert.]

I asked. Someone recognizes them from his own world. Eat, and I'll give you the dissertation.

[Science is more important than eating! Still, Robert takes the offered muffin in hand and begins to systemically peel the layer of wax paper away as he consumes it almost daintily.

But he's clearly paying enraptured attention.]

[Don rewards this compliant behavior by launching into a summary of dragon species, their identifying features, and the fascinating abilities they have evolved. The fact that he can use real scientific terminology is wonderful.]

[The entire time, Robert just listens quietly, eyes bright with fascination as Don describes the dragons. Though their names are foreign and whimsical, the data he is giving are solid and understandable. He just wishes he could see these beautiful organisms for himself. (Even though on a few occasions he actually has. Albeit one was a hologram...)

Such are the kinds of biota that he had never had the chance to experience before Luceti.]

... Dragons sound absolutely breathtaking.

[Don stops there, and stuffs the end of his sandwich into his mouth.]

Ah teh y' m'r la'r, buh liyuwuh hammi sheh 'fi doh geh ho soo.

Don. Seriously. You are a man of many paradoxes - a second ago, eloquent and as well-spoken as any Terran scientist.

And then this.]

... excuse me...?

[Intelligent doesn't always equal cultured. Don is a teenager who grew up in a sewer; having class is not high on his list of skills and interests.]

[He swallows and calmly repeats:] I'll tell you more later, but Leo will have my shell if I don't get home soon.

[For Robert, they are often one and the same, especially considering their treatment on Terra; sometimes the oddness of Don's behaviour registers to him, other times it does not, but either way he is left with a vague sense of difference between their cultures.

... Then again, it's not one he's ever really been truly bothered by. This isn't the first time it's happened.]

... Ah, yes. ... Of course.

... Do you wish to take the food with you, or would you rather finish it before you leave?

[Don sighs.] I'd rather sit here, but Leo's threatening bodily harm if I don't hurry up. [He grabs the snowsuit and nudges Robert's hip.] Let me out so I can put this thing on.

[At the nudge, Robert slides out of the booth, pulling himself to his feet and immediately going to clean the table while he stands.

Hopefully not standing in the way, of course. That'd defeat the point.]

[Don starts wrestling his way into the snowsuit, turning on the heating coils as he does so.]

So what were you doing while I was gone?

[... That question has some answers Don might not want to hear.

Let's go for a more innocuous one first.]

[There's a strange mix of almost-foreboding and... pride, in Robert's voice.]

[Half-dressed and balancing on one leg, Don still manages to look delighted at this news.]

I certainly have your efforts, as well as Ms. Daisy's and Helios' good advice, to thank in that regard. [Robert manages a smile.] ... It was very strange, though...

... I intend to have a proper MRI done whilst undergoing magic training, to... see the effects.

[This is something Don will have difficulty dissuading Robert from.]

[Don looks surprised at this.]

... [Well, this wasn't something he had considered.]

... Is it... something I need to ask consent for...?

[He frowns, though it may have more to do with the stuck zipper than the conversation.]

Do you mean you want to have an MRI done while you're communicating with her?

[Does Don need help with that? Because Robert will totally help with that.]

Essentially, yes. I was... mostly interested in seeing the... neurological procedures that must go into the manipulation and... distribution of magic...

[... It just seems to him that there has to be some kind of concrete process.]

[Argh. This requires the efforts of someone better at dealing with small objects.]

Then at the least, you're recording a conversation with her. I would think that requires consent...

Of course... [And Robert takes his aptly-named small fingers to the zipper on Don's coat, stooping a little to work it out of the edge it caught on.

At the same time:]

... You have a valid point. But how do I ask Nala for consent...? It is not as though she, er, is capable of providing any sort of... coherent recordable answer...

You can sense how she's feeling, right? [... Wait. It now occurs to Don to wonder how the non-verbal communication of this kind of meditation interacts with Robert's particular disabilities.] Can you?

[... How does he explain this...]

... Well... I am, er, n-not truly certain...

... You see, the last times I have... communicated with Nala, it has been... [- and his voice drops nervously -] almost hallucinogenic.

[This clearly surprises him.]
