Thirty-First Theory [Action]

[The last thing they remember, they were warm in bed with their other brothers. Now they are two, and for reasons beyond their comprehension they are waking up in a snowbank.

The sun is bright, the snow is wet, and the frigid air seeps into their bones.]

Raphie, I'm - I'm cold.

C-c’mon, Donnie. [He latches onto his brother’s hand and starts pulling him out of the snow.] We n-need a better hidin’ spot.

Okay.

[The two tiny Turtles climb out of the hollow in the deep snow and, huddled against one another, strike out in search of shelter.]

How cute.

They think I'm a giant elderly rat. [She whispers to Winry. But she dutifully cuddles them back, because...yeah, they're flippin' CUTE is what they are, poor little things.]

[Raphie snuffles a little in his sleep, frowning. That didn't sound like Sensei, and the smell isn't right either. Neither is the bed. It's way too soft.]

[Oh. Wait. Something here is not right.

Donatello opens his eyes and there's a human in the bed.

He tries to push away but his arms don’t seem to be working very well.]

Ahhh...

Shhhhhh---Donnie, it's okay, honey. [Honey?]

[There's that voice again. And now Donnie's squirming. Raph scrunches his eyes closed tighter, still clinging to April's shirt. It's nice and warm here, and Master Splinter will protect them. He doesn't want to wake up, so he ~~kicks~~ nudges Donnie with his foot to make him shut up.]

[Hiding. This can't be happening. In another minute he'll wake up for real and -

Ow. Raphie, you kick hard and your feet are cold.

And the human is still there.]

Who are you??

Donatello--it's April. [She shifts around clingy Raphael in order to get more comfortable.] I'm your friend. You don't remember me?

[The panic in his brother's voice jolts him awake, and his eyes open to a scene of pure terror. That wasn't Master Splinter, that was a human.

He tries to scream, tries to shy away but he's weak and sluggish from the cold. He only manages to push away from April enough to cling to his brother, his scream only a moan that quickly dissolves to tears.

They're too little to fight this big human all by themselves, and he doesn't want to die.]

Go 'way!

[His too-heavy arms are suddenly full of Raphael, and he blurts out:] It's December and I don't know you! [Not even the right month, but the cold makes it hard to keep track of these things.]

[Okay, O'Neil. You gotta calm these kids down.

Very gently, April lays a warm palm against Raphael's cheek and takes Donatello's hand reassuringly with her other.]

Shhhh...I'm friends with Master Splinter. Your father, he asked me to look out for you. I'm not going to hurt you...I'm just trying to get you warm. And I can also make you something delicious to eat, if you're hungry...

[Raph shies away from her hand, warm as it is, and sobs.]

I d-don't like you!

[Friends with Master Splinter? It doesn't seem very likely. Then again, this human does know their names. And how to help them get warm. Maybe...]

If you know Sensei, then -- then, um... [He wants to challenge her claim, to ask something only a real friend of Master Splinter would know, but his brain won't work right and he can't think of anything.]

Then I'll know that he named you all out of that Renaissance Masters book?

[Donnie's talking to it...

...and it seems kinda nice.

But he's scared and this human is weird and he thought she was Master Splinter but now he isn't even here. Not even Leo and Mikey are here.

His crying quiets a little as he thinks, hiccuping and rubbing at his eyes.]

[... That's true.]

[He lowers his head to nudge his snout against his brother's. Don't cry, Raphie...]

Where - where is he?

He's not here, Donnie. [Raphael is just about breaking her heart.] You two have to be brave without him. And I can protect you, okay? I won't let anyone hurt you.

[Raphie sniffles miserably, nuzzling his brother back.]

I w-want Sensei.

[He said humans are bad. Why aren't you bad?]

[That didn't really answer the question. But being brave? He can do that.]

[This is his brave face.]

Wow! You must be the bravest turtle in the world, Donnie!

[Raphie frowns at that, a touch of jealousy before he mirrors his brother's expression. He can be brave too!]

[Aw, go on.]

[Donnie wiggles around, trying to extricate himself from his brother and the blankets. Brave turtles don't lay around in bed; they get up and face the world.]

And Raphael! I didn't realize you were so brave!

[April slowly climbs out of the bed, trying not to make any sudden moves.] And with a red bandanna, too. That's the color of courage.

[He puffs up a bit, but doesn't seem all that hasty to leave the nest. He just wriggles to his knees and scoots over to the warm spot April left behind, smiling.]

[Nope, getting out of bed now. He wanders around the room, looking up at all the sharp and shiny things on the shelves.]

Wow... Raphie, look.
