Helios, I need to talk to you. About your barrier.

[After this conversation, Don will attempt to occupy himself around the house. He swore off his tools and computer earlier in the week, and hasn't quite figured out yet how to fill his time without them. While he putters, he'll wonder whether anyone will remember that it's his birthday. Probably not. It's an arbitrary date, anyway - unlike six days from now, which will mark his one-year anniversary in Luceti.]

[The thoughts put him in a melancholy mood. Or maybe that's because it's been snowing for three days straight; or maybe it's because yesterday's events have taken a toll on his energy. Whatever the reason, it is a quiet and reflective Donatello that his housemates will find if they come looking for him.]

Oh thank goodness. [ Relieved sigh. ]

Well it's essentially designed to protect anyone with access inside of it. But just as a precaution, in case anyone can break through, I've added a few personal touches of my own to the original spell. [ He does a lot of personal touches to older spells. ]

It's like a barrier within a barrier! Haha. I've never had to use it thankfully.

Helios, your - barrier doesn't do anything against the Malnosso, does it? [His tone indicates he already knows the answer is 'no'.]

I-I'm sorry. It doesn't, no, but...I have been working on something with Frederic that might someday help in that.

Is there anything I can do to help?

Hm. Ah! Maybe! Do you think you could make something that can produce varying degrees of sound? Different pitches and frequencies perhaps? If it's not too much trouble of course. [ This is probably a really odd question. ] I've been using Frederic's piano but there's only so many notes one can hit.

I could make some tuning forks... I don't have a very good ear, though. [The bizarreness of the request occurs to him.] Why, Helios?

Oh nothing really. Just a sound cancellation spell we've been working on. [ He says that with a tone of indifference as if it's nothing. And it has been just that. Pesky spell has been giving him loads of problems. ]

I think it might be easier to complete if I had a wider range to work with.

[Don doesn't really see what that has to do with the barrier, but Helios has helped him out enough that he doesn't mind helping the wizard with his own projects. Even if it means making an exception to his tool abstinence.]

I'll try to get to the smithy. [A long pause.] Helios, you had better be here when I finish.

[ Not anything to do with the barrier, no, but it might help counteract the Malnosso's experiments one day. You can blame a very trauma inducing Halloween for this little project. ]

Be here when you finish? I don't think can I really go very far! [ A laugh. But he honestly knows what you mean, he's just keeping conversation light. ] Thank you Donatello, I'm very grateful for this.

[He appreciates it. He's very close to his breaking point on this one.]

How many do you need? ["What range" might be a better question, but Don has no sense of musical scales.]

I think seven should work out fine--if you can manage.

I can do seven.
